 NICKELODEON CONVERSION
                                                                     (Click pictures to enlarge)
This piano is a 1925 Story & Clark. It will be converted to Nickelodeon. Instruments will include a 24 note Glockenspiel, Tambourine, Indian wood block, Triangle, Cymbal , Bass drum and Snare Drum .

This Nickelodeon will be operated by Midi system designed by Roberts Musical Restorations. Included will be an onboard MIDI signal decoder and processor. There will be NO Roll Frame. Air solenoids will be installed on the to each note input nipple and will allow air to enter the valve the same as if the roll was playing operated by the Midi board. This is a new system that I have designed that will enable anyone to convert a working Player Piano to operate of a laptop.

This is a picture of the solenoid valve that will be installed.

This is a Story & Clark piano and uses a nice player stack. I will remove the spool frame and rebuild the stack. It will be mounted under the keys when completed.

Before & After

This Piano did not have shelf above the keys. Had to re-work the key cover and fabricate a new shelf so the front glass panel would have something to sit on.

Here is the mock up. The expansion was made with cheap pine and spare wood. Just wanted to see how the final product was going to look like before using the hard woods. The Glockenspiel will go in the bottom section and the rest of the instruments in the top.

Now you can see why I had to build a shelf above the keys. This is the completed skeleton. Just need to add bottom panel.

Now its time for veneering.

Building the 25 note GLOCKENSPIEL 4/09/07

This Glock is built with valves that are designed my Roberts Musical Restorations. They are designed so you don't need an additional valve body to run the pneumatics. Its all self contained. Just tee it into the tracker bar and attach a vacuum source. They also work great on Accordions.

MAKING THE BARS

Figuring out where bridges will be spaced.                Drilling the hole and the shoulder bore.

Tuning bars. Notice I stamped the note on the bar.

Carved bottom of bar to fine    tune.

All buffed

COMPLETED GLOCKENSPIEL

I will be adding all my Nickelodeon instruments to my catalog shortly. A completed 25 note Glockenspiel like above will retail for $1945.00. The finished product is around 15" high (at highest point), 36" wide and 4"deep.

REITERATING WOOD BLOCK

18" BASS DRUM & BEATER ASSEMBLY

Here you see the main body vacuum channels before being glued together.

   Being Gluing together

These are the pneumatics before being covered. They are all double hinged being that I will be installing hinge springs later on.

                              13" SNARE DRUM BEATER

These pictures are showing the modifies stack. I removed the top tracker bar assembly from stack, built new pneumatics and installed unit under the key board. After I positioned and secured the stack I then drilled holes for the push rods, installed fingers on the pneumatics and cut rods for custom fit.

 The Veneering is finished
Case is now completely finished. Veneered in Mahogany. Ready for stain and Lacquer.

These two pictures are just show some ideas of the instruments layout.             These two pictures are computer drawn to show the different leaded glass ideas.

Probably going with this. Noting too                                       fancy this time.

These pictures are of the completed case with out the instruments.

Refurbished Keys installed leveled and set.     The rebuilt hammer assembly is installed.

The leaded glass will be done next so I can position the instruments where they look good viewed threw the glass.

MIDI VALVES INSTALLATION

These valves where installed externally instead of directly inserted into the ports. In this application if the valves where installed directly into the ports it would have interfered with the pneumatic lift adjustments so I build these valves in groups to be installed externally like you see in the pictures below or you could mount them on the inside walls, bottom deck etc. I like the valves as close to the source as possible. Check out my Gulbransen conversion on the top of this page and there I have pictures of the valves being inserted directly into the ports on the stack.

I have seen people use Reisner Valves to accomplish the same task but seems to me these valves are much more efficient. The only thing you need to do is find a place to mount them, wire them up and your done. Not to mention the fast response time they produce and made of the highest quality. These valves are now available. Contact me for pricing or for any questions. Also can be bought in groups like below. They operate on 12volt DC.

The below picture shows the stained glass done and instruments temporarily installed to see how it looks from the outside. Now I just have to connect instruments and hook up all the electronics and it will be completed.

This Snare Beater Has an Damper installed to put pressure on the snare strings when not in use.

Double duty Cymbal. Crash and Ride beater.

Mandolin Rail pneumatic.

Exterior MIDI jack   hookup.

Very quiet Vacuum Box also made by RMR.

Here are the MIDI electronics. Power Supply is mounted on Bottom, Midi processing board sets in a custom holder attached to side and the solid state on-off controller.
